Whitby Abbey, Whitby, North Yorkshire

The remains of Whitby Abbey stands high on a hill on the South side of the River Esk in Whitby, North Yorkshire. It's prominent position makes it visible for miles around. The area surrounding the site of Whitby Abbey is belived to have been inhabited since 657 and was home to a monastic community founded by King Oswy of Northumbria and ruled by St. Hilda. The remains of the later abbey and monastery date from the 11th century onwards.
